How the SSAT Upper is scored
Results on the SSAT Upper are reported as percentiles from 1 to 99, which compare a student with others in the same grade who took the test, so a higher percentile means outscoring more of that group.
Every question offers five answer choices. A correct answer earns one point, a wrong answer costs 1/4 of a point, and a question left blank neither adds nor subtracts, so blind guessing does not pay but eliminating some choices first can.
The three scored areas are Quantitative (Math), with 50 questions in 60 minutes, Reading Comprehension, with 40 questions in 40 minutes, and Verbal, with 60 questions in 30 minutes.
