Author's purpose questions ask why a passage, or one part of it, was written: to inform, to persuade, to entertain, to describe, or to explain how something works.
They can also target a single paragraph or sentence, asking what it contributes, such as introducing an example or answering an objection. In SSAT Upper reading, answer choices often begin with a verb like to argue, to describe or to criticize, so the verb matters as much as the topic.
A choice can name the right subject but the wrong aim, for instance saying a passage argues for a policy when it only explains how the policy works.
