Evaluating opinions and arguments on the SSAT Upper Reading Comprehension section tests whether a student can judge a writer's claims and reasoning, not just locate facts. The student must separate opinion from evidence, identify what a claim rests on, and decide which statement the author would support or reject. Items typically ask which view the author would agree with, which idea supports or weakens an argument, or which sentence is opinion rather than fact. Answer choices are close paraphrases: traps restate a true detail that is not the author's stance, mix a speaker's view with the writer's, or overstate a mild claim.
