Figurative language means words used in a non-literal way to create an image or comparison: similes, metaphors, personification, hyperbole and idioms.
Questions in SSAT Upper reading, especially on poems and fiction, ask what a phrase means or what effect it has. Saying that a classroom was a beehive does not mean it contained bees; it means the room was busy and noisy.
The key is to identify which two things are being compared and which quality they share. Wrong choices often take the phrase literally, or name the correct device but misread the feeling it is meant to convey.
