Author's attitude and tone — SSAT Upper practice questions

On the SSAT Upper Reading Comprehension section, Author's attitude and tone asks students to infer how the writer feels about the subject of a passage rather than simply restating facts. A student has to weigh word choice, imagery, and emphasis to distinguish a measured, ironic, or admiring stance from the feelings of characters inside the text. Questions usually present a short prompt after a fiction or nonfiction passage and five adjective-based choices, often in pairs. Common traps include selecting a word that is too harsh or too cheerful for the diction, confusing the narrator with the author, or matching the topic's seriousness instead of the writer's actual voice.
