Author's attitude and tone questions ask how the writer feels about the subject, judged from word choice rather than from any direct statement.
Tone words in the answer choices are often near opposites, such as admiring versus critical or detached versus enthusiastic, so deciding first whether the attitude is positive, negative or neutral removes several options. Extreme words like contemptuous or ecstatic are seldom correct, since most SSAT Upper passages take a measured view.
A useful clue is a single loaded adjective: calling an idea naive signals mild criticism, while calling it bold suggests respect.
