What this topic is

Data analysis (tables, graphs, trends) questions ask you to read information from a table, bar graph, line graph or pie chart and then compute something with it.

The mean is the total divided by the count, while the median is the middle value once the data are put in order, and the two are easy to confuse under time pressure. In a pie chart, a sector's share of the data equals its share of the full three hundred sixty degrees, so a quarter of the data fills a ninety-degree slice.

Some SSAT Upper items change the data partway through, and wrong choices often reflect the numbers before the change.

A class survey showed 18 students chose spiral notebooks, 12 chose composition notebooks, and 10 chose binders. Then 5 students who chose composition notebooks changed their choice to binders. After the change, what fraction of the students chose binders?

There are $18 + 12 + 10 = 40$ students in all. After 5 students switch to binders, 15 students choose binders. The fraction is $\frac{15}{40} = \frac{3}{8}$ .

Question 3Easier

In a pie chart, a sector represents $\frac{1}{5}$ of the data. What is the measure of the central angle of the sector?
