How the ISEE Upper is scored
Results are reported as a Stanine for each of the four sections, on a scale from 1 to 9, with the middle stanines representing average performance among students in the same grade.
Correct answers are converted to a scaled score and a percentile, which the stanine groups into 9 bands. Every question has 4 answer choices, and a wrong answer costs nothing, so leaving a question blank never helps. Scored sections are Verbal Reasoning with 40 questions in 20 minutes, Quantitative Reasoning with 37 in 35, Reading Comprehension with 36 in 35, and Mathematics Achievement with 47 in 40. An unscored essay is sent to schools.
