What this topic is

Ratios, rates, and proportional relationships connect two quantities that change together.

A direct proportion keeps their ratio constant, while an inverse relationship keeps their product constant, so if one doubles the other halves. Rate problems often require unit conversion, such as turning kilometers per hour into meters per second by multiplying by 1,000 and dividing by the number of seconds in an hour.

Setting up a proportion with matching units in matching positions prevents most errors. ACT Mathematics also asks for a ratio like x to y drawn from an equation, and wrong answer choices frequently come from flipping a ratio or converting units in the wrong direction.

Question 1Easier

The quantity x varies inversely with y. When x=6, y=8. What is x when y=12?

Show answer

Answer: B — 4

For inverse variation, xy is constant. Thus 6(8)=12x, so x=4.

Question 2Mid

A delivery drone flies at a constant speed of 54 kilometers per hour. What is the drone’s speed in meters per second?

(Note: 1 kilometer = 1,000 meters)

Show answer

Answer: C — 15

Convert: 54⋅10003600=54⋅518=15 meters per second.

Question 3Mid

If 4x−yx+2y=35, then xy= ?

Show answer

Answer: B — 1117

Cross-multiplication gives 20x−5y=3x+6y, so 17x=11y and x/y=11/17.

Every question is picked for where you are right now, wrong answers come back until they stick, and it all works offline.
