Judging validity / evaluating hypotheses — ACT practice questions
On the ACT Science test, judging validity / evaluating hypotheses covers whether a claim or experimental conclusion is actually supported by the studies shown. A student has to compare a hypothesis with the data, spot weak controls or overreach, and decide which explanation holds. Questions usually follow a short experiment or paired studies and ask which statement is best supported, what would strengthen or weaken a hypothesis, or which conclusion is not justified. Traps include answers that sound scientific but are not backed by the passage and treating correlation as cause. Choices tend to be brief claims or design tweaks that differ mainly in how far they stretch the evidence.
