To discover the air’s routes, volunteers take temperatures at numbered stakes across the slope. On clear, still evenings, they walk assigned paths, pausing at the same identical moment1 every fifteen minutes so that the readings represent a single snapshot.
Some early field thermometers were sold in wooden cases decorated with carved vines.2 Each volunteer records a stake number and temperature, then returns to the upper boundary before the next round. By sunrise, the recording sheets hold rows of figures rather than a recognizable picture.3 The resulting map often reveals frost pockets—shallow hollows where chilled air settles—that4 escape notice during daytime inspections.
Once these routes are known, growers can revise their plans. On the map, each pocket is shaded according to it’s5 depth and duration. Growers then consult those markings before choosing where to place sensitive trees. The finished map is copied neatly and stored in a cabinet.6 Elsewhere, workers may replace a planned solid fence with a slatted barrier so that cold air can continue moving downhill.
The same evidence guides smaller adjustments as well. Crews prune dense shrubs beside low areas and clear leaves from narrow drainage gaps. A blocked gap can hold cold air much as a fallen branch can hold back water in a narrow stream7. At the season’s end, workers compare, the newest map8 with earlier maps. They trust a pattern only after it appears on several nights, since one unusual reading might reflect a misplaced thermometer.
