The mean is the total divided by the count, and many statistics questions are easiest to solve by working with totals instead of averages.
When an average rises after one new score is added, the new total minus the old total gives that score directly. A median is the middle value of an ordered list, so replacing an extreme value can shift the median even though only one number changed.
Statistics (center, spread, plots) also includes range, which measures spread as the gap between the largest and smallest values, and reading data from dot plots, histograms, and box plots.
