What this topic is

Linear functions are written in function notation, such as f(x) = mx + b, where m is the constant rate of change and b is the output when the input is zero.

Questions ask for an input that produces a given output, for an output from a slope and one known point, or for the meaning of a coefficient in context. A frequent mix-up is finding f(x) when the question asks for x, or the reverse.

Modeling questions describe temperature, cost or distance changing at a steady rate, and units matter: if the input counts hundreds of meters, the final answer may need converting to meters.

Pick an answer to see whether it is right — nothing is saved, and nothing needs an account.

Question 1Easier

A linear function p is defined by p(x)=3x−8. If p(k)=13, what is the value of k?

Show answer

Answer: C — 7

Substitution gives 3k−8=13. Adding 8 and then dividing by 3 gives k=7.

Question 2Mid

The linear function q has slope −2, and q(−1)=9. What is the value of q(4)?

Show answer

Answer: B — −1

The input increases by 5 from −1 to 4, so the output changes by 5(−2)=−10. Therefore, q(4)=9−10=−1.

Question 3Mid

The function T(a)=21−0.6a models the air temperature, in degrees Celsius, at a height of a hundreds of meters above a reference elevation. At what height, in meters, does the model predict an air temperature of 13.8 degrees Celsius?

Show answer

Answer: C — 1,200

Solving 21−0.6a=13.8 gives a=12. Since a is measured in hundreds of meters, the height is 12(100)=1,200 meters.

Every question is picked for where you are right now, wrong answers come back until they stick, and it all works offline.
